During a community event on 26 September, we unveiled ‘The Navvy’ – a distinctive treetop sculpture adjacent to the station platform.

Celebrating the Mallaig Line’s 125th anniversary this year, the museum joined forces with the West Highland Community Rail Partnership to commission a tribute to the thousands of navvies who built our railway. Once permission to carve the lineside tree had been granted by Network Rail this summer, we commissioned Glasgow-based chainsaw artist Justina Kasponyte to create a commemorative sculpture, standing 5 metres above the ground. Partnership funding for the project was awarded by ScotRail, Friends of the West Highland Lines and Friends of Glenfinnan Station.

We are grateful to ASW Construction Ltd for their contribution and prompt scaffolding work, and to Lochaber Community Wind Band for adding fanfare and flourish to the proceedings.
